Conditions Library
Every condition covered by Rehab Science, organised head to feet. Complete pages follow a standard template—overview, anatomy, symptoms, causes, aggravating factors, assessment, differentials, treatment and prevention. Indexed pages already link to the right protocol and book pages while their full write-up is in progress.
Head & Neck
General (non-specific) neck pain
indexedCommon neck pain and stiffness at the back and side of the neck without a single identifiable cause.
Neck strain and sprain (whiplash)
indexedMuscle and ligament injury from rapid neck flexion–extension, e.g. a rear-end collision.
Cervical spondylosis (neck arthritis)
indexedAge-related changes in the neck joints and discs that may cause stiffness and pain.
Neck disc herniation and stenosis (cervical radiculopathy)
indexedNerve-root irritation in the neck causing sharp neck pain with symptoms travelling down the arm.
Thoracic outlet syndrome
indexedIrritation of nerves (and sometimes vessels) between the neck and armpit causing arm symptoms.
Cervicogenic (neck-related) headache
indexedHeadache referred from the upper neck, often one-sided, starting at the back of the head.
Temporomandibular disorder (jaw pain)
indexedPain and dysfunction of the jaw joint and chewing muscles.
Shoulder
Rotator cuff injury (tear / tendinopathy)
Four small muscles—the rotator cuff—hold the ball of the shoulder in its socket and turn the arm.
Shoulder impingement (subacromial pain syndrome)
"Impingement" is now called subacromial pain syndrome: the tissues under the bony roof of the shoulder (the acromion) become sensitive—the supraspinatus tendon, the long biceps tendon and a fluid sac called the bursa.
Shoulder (subacromial) bursitis
partialShoulder bursitis is listed among the conditions treated by the Shoulder Pain protocol.
Shoulder instability (labral tear, dislocation, subluxation)
The labrum is a rim of cartilage that deepens the shoulder socket.
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
The capsule around the shoulder joint tightens, causing growing stiffness and pain.
Biceps tendinopathy (long head)
The long tendon of the biceps runs up the front of the upper arm and attaches at the top of the shoulder socket.
Elbow
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylalgia)
indexedWrist-extensor tendon pain on the outside of the elbow.
Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylalgia)
indexedWrist-flexor tendon pain on the inside of the elbow.
Triceps tendinopathy
indexedPain at the triceps tendon on the back of the elbow.
Wrist & Hand
Wrist sprain
indexedLigament injury of the wrist, often from falling onto an outstretched hand.
De Quervain's tenosynovitis (thumb tendon pain)
indexedIrritation of two thumb tendons on the thumb side of the wrist.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
indexedMedian-nerve irritation at the wrist causing numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle and half the ring finger.
Back & Spine
Non-specific low back pain (acute and chronic)
indexedLow back pain without a single identifiable structural cause—the large majority of back pain.
Low back muscle strain
indexedStrain of the back muscles, often from lifting.
Facet joint sprain
indexedIrritation of the small joints at the back of the spine.
Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis
indexedA stress fracture of part of a vertebra, sometimes with forward slipping.
Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain
indexedPain from the joint between the spine and pelvis, usually one-sided.
Sciatica (from the low back)
indexedLumbar nerve irritation with symptoms into the buttock and down the leg.
Lumbar disc herniation
indexedA disc bulge or herniation in the low back, often with leg symptoms.
Lumbar stenosis
indexedNarrowing around lumbar nerves causing leg symptoms with standing or walking, eased by bending forward.
Thoracic disc bulge
indexedA disc problem in the mid-back producing local or wrap-around pain.
Rib injuries (sprain
indexedRib sprains, fractures or subluxations causing pain with breathing and twisting.
Hip
Hip impingement (FAI)
indexedBony shape of the hip joint causing pinching pain at the front of the hip and groin in deep flexion.
Hip labral tear
indexedTear of the hip socket's cartilage rim with sharp groin or front-of-hip pain.
Hip osteoarthritis
indexedAge-related cartilage changes in the hip with stiffness and groin pain.
Gluteal tendinopathy and trochanteric bursitis
indexedGluteal tendon and bursa pain on the outside of the hip.
Piriformis syndrome (deep gluteal pain syndrome)
indexedIrritation of the sciatic nerve deep in the buttock.
Hip flexor strain and tendinopathy (incl. iliopsoas bursitis)
indexedStrain or tendon irritation of the muscles that lift the thigh.
Hamstring strain
indexedTear of hamstring muscle fibres, typically while sprinting.
Proximal hamstring tendinopathy
indexedHamstring tendon pain at the sit bone, worse sitting and stretching.
Groin strain (adductor strain)
indexedStrain of the inner-thigh muscles from kicking or rapid direction changes.
Knee
Patellofemoral joint pain (runner's knee)
indexedPain around or behind the kneecap, typically with stairs, squats and prolonged sitting.
Iliotibial (IT) band syndrome
indexedPain on the outside of the thigh just above the knee, common in runners and cyclists.
Meniscus tear
indexedTear of the knee's shock-absorbing cartilage with catching, locking or giving way.
Knee ligament tear (ACL
indexedSprain or rupture of a knee ligament; a full ACL tear causes the knee to give way.
Kneecap (patellar) dislocation
indexedThe kneecap slips out of its groove, usually toward the outside.
Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee)
indexedTendon pain just below (or above) the kneecap from jumping and loading.
Knee osteoarthritis
indexedCartilage wear inside the knee with pain and stiffness; strength training reduces pain.
Ankle & Foot
Achilles tendinopathy / tear
indexedAchilles tendon pain from overload; a sudden pop with inability to push off suggests rupture.
Calf strain
indexedTear of calf muscle fibres, often during push-off.
Plantar fasciopathy (fasciitis)
indexedIrritation of the plantar fascia at the front of the heel—worst with the first steps.
Ankle sprain
